Yamaha has officially stepped into India’s electric two-wheeler space with the launch of the EC-06.

The electric scooter was first showcased in Mumbai and is currently available in select states including Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, marking Yamaha’s first EV for the Indian market.

The EC-06 shares its platform with the River Indie, developed by Bengaluru-based River Mobility. While the mechanicals are largely the same, Yamaha has given the scooter its own identity.

In terms of design, the EC-06 leans towards a cleaner, more conventional design compared to the Indie’s boxy and utilitarian approach, with simpler headlamp and tail-lamp designs. The design is sharper and more angular, with triangular side panels, a sculpted front apron and a blacked-out upper section housing a stacked headlamp. Some cues, like the protruding headlight layout, hint at its River roots, but the overall look is sleeker.

The EC-06 is powered by a 4kWh battery paired with an electric motor that puts out 6.7kW and 26Nm of torque. Yamaha claims a top speed of 79kmph and a certified range of 169km, which is slightly higher than the River Indie’s.

Charging can be done via a regular household socket, with a claimed 0–80 percent charge time of around eight hours and close to 10 hours for a full charge.

Feature-wise, the EC-06 stays close to its River sibling. It gets a colour LCD display, three riding modes—Eco, Standard and Power—and reverse assist. The LCD layout, however, is similar to the older River Indie, as the newer Gen 2.5 version uses an updated interface.

Where the two differ more noticeably is practicality and styling. The EC-06 offers 24.5 litres of underseat storage and does away with a front storage box, opting instead for a charging port in that space.

In contrast, the Indie is known for its massive 43-litre underseat boot and additional front storage. The leaner bodywork helps the EC-06 shed about 3kg, bringing its kerb weight down to 132kg.

Despite wearing a Yamaha badge, the EC-06 will be manufactured at River Mobility’s facility in Hoskote, Karnataka, highlighting the close collaboration between the two brands.
